- Avoid drinking too much alcohol.
- Eat healthily.
- Start a new routine.

- Paint your new house.
- Seek help from an expert.
Let’s take a look at each of these in a bit more detail.
1. Socialise with existing friends and family to help lift your mood and conquer depression
One of the symptoms of depression is withdrawing from life. To avoid this from happening you should begin socialising with friends and family. Invite friends or family over for drinks or for a dinner party to your new house. But be mindful of point 5 below and don’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol.
Socialising will help to improve your mood, which is especially the case if you can enjoy laugher with your friends or family. Get excited about showing off your new house. When your friends or family arrive show them your new home and get their input on what you should do with colour schemes and carpets etc. See point 10 below.

Being active is a great way to beat depression. If you aren’t into going to the gym (see point 4 below) take regular walks. Going for regular walks will not only give you the exercise to help beat depression, but it will also help you to discover your new neighbourhood.
Also, and according to Dr. Alan Cohen who is a specialist interest in mental health, “any type of exercise is useful, as long as it suits you and you do enough of it.”
When you exercise your body releases hormones called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain and trigger a positive feeling in the body, which is similar to that of morphine. Endorphins are to depression like oil and water which cannot mix.
4. Joining a gym and exercise will help you to lift your mood
There is evidence that regular exercise can improve your mood. The best way to improve your mood through exercise would be to join a gym. One of the best forms of exercise to help fight depression is consistence and regular exercise.
The form of exercise isn’t as important as how often it’s done. All forms of exercise will generate endorphins which will help you to combat depression.

You may think that by drinking alcohol this will help you. It may feel like it helps at the time when you are under the influence of alcohol, as your feeling of depression goes away temporarily. But this will be short-lived.
Alcohol won’t solve your problems and it may make you worse. Waking up with a hangover will only serve to make you feel worse. So everything in moderation.

Having depression can lead on to having a downward spiral of poor routines and habits. This can include for example, staying up late to watch TV or to play computer games. This will lead to needing to sleep during the day or make you feel worse. When you’re tired everything can seem worse and problems become magnified.
Try to set a positive routine of going to bed before 11pm or at the latest before midnight. Set your alarm to wake up at the same time each morning. Try to get into a routine of eating your meals at similar times. Plus get into a routine of exercise too.
8. Join a choir or start singing lessons is a way to help with your depression after buying a house
It has been proven that singing is good for you. When you sing you also release endorphins, which is a hormone that’s associated with feelings of pleasure. But also oxytocin is released by singing too, which has been found to alleviate anxiety and stress. Whilst oxytocin is known as the love hormone it is also referred to as a happy hormone too.
Whilst you may not be able to sing or this might be way out of your comfort zone, it may be worth a try.
Here’s a thought: Why don’t you run to your singing lesson and run home afterwards. Your body will be full of happy hormones at the end of the day and your depressed feelings will be kicked into touch! When you get home you’ll be feeling on top of the world and ready to entertain your new friends.
9. Laughter is a killer of depression if you’ve just bought a house and feeling depressed
Another activity that triggers the release of endorphins is laughter. Not only is it difficult to feel depressed when you’re laughing, but the act of laughing triggers the release of these natural feel-good chemicals.
If you watch TV find a funning film or a program with your favourite comedian to watch. Look for a local comedy theatre to spend an evening laughing.
10. Painting your new house in certain colours will help with depression which includes red and purple
If your depression has been sparked off after buying a house you may need to tackle this face on. The house you bought may be completely up together and the decoration may be fresh. But the colours and design will be that of the sellers.
Why don’t you take ownership of your new house and change something. I suggest you begin by painting the room you spend the most time in, which might be the kitchen. But you will also spend a lot of time in your bedroom. You’ll fall asleep staring at the walls and then wake up looking at the same walls in the morning.
Think about what colours would make you happy. If this is your first house you’ve owned, where previously you’ve rented, you may not have made the transition to a home-ownership yet. Now that you own the property you can do pretty much what you like to it.
For example, if you love the colour purple or baby pink, there’s nothing to stop you from painting the walls any of these colours. You no longer need permission from a landlord!
Let me tell you something you may not know, the following colours are good for depression:
- Violet/purple (ideal for severe depression).

If you choose one of the above colours, most are very bold. So as not to overpower any room with too much dark colour, you might be better to accentuate one wall in each room with the dark colour.
